出会い Deai -Encounter

今日の言葉は「出会い」。
「出会い」という言葉を知っていますか？人にたまたま会う、物事に偶然直面する、という意味です。「出会い」が名詞で、「出会う」が動詞です。
禅の教えでは、すべての出会いには「ご縁」があり、たとえ嫌な出会いであっても何かしらの縁、意味があって出会ったのだ、といいます。
嬉しいご縁はもちろん大歓迎なのですが、嫌な人に会った、ひどい目にあった、という時もありますよね。そういうときも、禅ではそこから学ぶべきことがあるはずだと考えて（私はこういうことはやらないよう、反面教師にしようなど）、そのためのご縁だったのだと考えます。
嫌なことに出会ってしまったときに、「時間を無駄にした」と思って嫌な気分になるより、自分で気持ちを立て直せるので、お勧めですよ。

Today's word: deai — encounter.
Do you know the word deai? It means to come across someone or something by chance — an unexpected meeting, an unplanned moment of crossing paths. Deai is the noun; deau is the verb.
In Zen teaching, every encounter carries go-en — a fateful connection. Even an unpleasant one. Whatever you meet, whoever crosses your path, there is a reason for it, a thread that brought you together.
A happy encounter is of course a wonderful thing. But what about the difficult ones? The person who was unkind to you. The situation that went badly. Zen would say: there is something to be learned even here. Perhaps it shows you how you don't want to be. Perhaps it's a reminder, a mirror, a lesson you needed.
Rather than walking away feeling that you wasted your time, you walk away with something — even if it's just the quiet resolution to be different.
That shift in perspective is something you can do for yourself, any time. I think it's worth trying.
