いよいよクリスマスの準備も佳境に入ってきたでしょうか？
日本では、今年を締めくくり、お正月を迎えるための準備が忙しくなってきています。

The year 2025 is coming to a close. How has your December been so far?
Perhaps your Christmas preparations are now in full swing.
Here in Japan, people are getting busy with year-end tasks as we prepare to welcome the New Year.

しばらく間があいてしまいましたが、また季節の言葉とともにお便りをお届けします。
日本は冬の気配が少しずつ深まり、空気の中に静かな冷たさが宿る頃ですね。

It has been a little while, but I’m happy to bring this newsletter back, together with some seasonal Japanese words.
Winter is slowly deepening in Japan, and the air now carries a quiet, crisp chill.

1. 「霜柱」Shimobashira — frost columns / needle ice

冬の朝、土の上にすっと立ち上がる細い氷の柱。
日本では、多くの人が子どもの頃に「踏んでサクッと音を楽しんだ」記憶と結びついている冬の小さな風景です。

On winter mornings, thin pillars of ice rise from the soil.
For many people in Japan, this small seasonal scene brings back childhood memories of crunching on them on the way to school.

霜柱は、じっと眺めるものではなく、足の裏で季節を感じる存在。
太陽がのぼると静かに溶けてしまう、そのはかなさが冬の訪れをそっと知らせてくれます。

Shimobashira is not something you simply admire from afar —
it’s something you feel under your feet.
It appears briefly and melts away in the morning sun, quietly signalling the arrival of winter.

2. 「冬晴れ」Fuyubare — clear winter sky

日本語では「秋晴れ」「冬晴れ」と言いますが、「春晴れ」「夏晴れ」は一般的ではありません。
澄んだ空気と冷たい季節だからこそ、空の透明感が際立つのでしょう。

In Japanese, we say akibare (clear autumn sky) and fuyubare (clear winter sky),
but not harubare or natsubare.
Perhaps it is the cold, crisp air that makes the sky appear so clear at this time of year.

冬の青空には、冷たさのなかにある静けさときりりとした美しさがあります。
外に出た瞬間のひんやりした空気とまぶしい光。そのコントラストが冬ならではの清々しさを生みます。

A winter sky holds both stillness and sharp, bright clarity.
The cool air you feel the moment you step outside, paired with the bright light above,
creates a unique freshness that belongs to winter alone.

3. 「年の瀬」Toshinose — the year’s end

同じ「年末」を表す言葉でも、響きやニュアンスが少しずつ異なります。

Japanese has several ways to refer to “the end of the year,”
each with its own nuance.

① 年の瀬（toshinose）
静かな焦り、せわしなさ、そして一年を振り返る気持ちが重なる、やや詩的な表現。

A slightly poetic expression that carries a quiet sense of rush,
busyness, and reflection as the year draws to an end.

② 年末（nenmatsu）
もっとも一般的で日常的。「年末セール」「年末調整」の“年末”です。

The standard and most commonly used term —
the one you see in everyday life, such as “year-end sale” or “year-end paperwork.”

③ 年の暮れ（toshinokure）
どこか懐かしく、柔らかい響きをもつ少し文学的な言い方。
落ち着いた雰囲気の中に、穏やかな余韻が残ります。

A gentle, somewhat old-fashioned expression with a soft, nostalgic tone.
It feels calm and literary, leaving a quiet aftertaste.
