ゆっくり /Slowly

今日のインスタグラムの投稿は「ゆっくり」と書きました。「ゆっくり」は動作の遅さを表す副詞です。
Today on Instagram, I wrote the word yukkuri (ゆっくり), which means “slowly.” It’s an adverb that describes the slowness of an action.
「ゆっくり」の「ゆ」の字自体、書くにはぐるぐる回っていますね。
The character ゆ itself feels like it’s turning in circles as you write it.
「ゆっくり」の意味は「遅い」と同じなのですが、「遅い！」と怒られることはあっても「ゆっくり！」と怒られることはなく、むしろ「ゆっくり来てね」「ゆっくりしていってね」というふうに相手を労ったり、安心させるために使うことが多い気がします。
The meaning of yukkuri is similar to “slow,” but while you might get scolded for being too slow, no one would ever be angry if you were too yukkuri. Instead, we often say things like “Yukkuri kite ne” (Take your time coming) or “Yukkuri shite itte ne” (Relax and stay as long as you like). It’s a word that carries care and gentleness.
同じ動作の遅さでも優しさを含んだ言葉です。
Even though it describes slowness, yukkuri has kindness within it.
今日の横浜はやっと晴れました。秋晴れが多いはずの10月に入って、なぜか暗く冷たい雨が多く、気分も鬱々としていたのですが、ようやく晴れて気持ちもゆったりしてきました。
Here in Yokohama, it finally cleared up today. Although October is usually filled with bright autumn skies, this year we’ve had many dark, cold, rainy days, which made me feel a bit gloomy.
Now that the sun is out again, I feel my mind beginning to relax, too.
こういう日は「ゆっくり」考え事をしたり、部屋を片付けたり、料理したりして、自分に優しくしたいですね。
On a day like this, I want to take things yukkuri—to think quietly, tidy my room, cook something, and be gentle with myself.
