古代ギリシャと日本を結ぶもの／A Connection Between Ancient Greece and Japan

皆さんは、日本とギリシャは全く違う文化圏だと思いますか？

Would you say that Japan and Greece belong to completely different cultural worlds?

古代ギリシャの文化は欧米の文化にも大きく影響しているので、西洋の文化のイメージも大きいですし、しかも日本は東の端。一見関係ないようにも思えますよね。

Many people associate ancient Greek culture with the foundations of Western civilisation. It has had a profound influence on European and American thought, and Japan—situated far to the east—may seem entirely unrelated.

しかし、７世紀前半という昔、実はギリシャの文化は日本へ渡ってきていたのです。

And yet, in the early 7th century, elements of Greek culture actually made their way to Japan.

ギリシャのパルテノン神殿の柱の形、「エンタシスの柱」の形は、実はこの頃日本へ伝わり、奈良県にある法隆寺や唐招提寺の柱の様式に採用されているのです。

One fascinating example is the architectural feature known as entasis—the subtle curve in the columns of the Parthenon in Athens. This technique was introduced to Japan around that time, and you can still see its influence in the columns of Hōryū-ji and Tōshōdai-ji temples in Nara.

また忍冬唐草文様と言われるスイカズラという花や草をモチーフにした文様は、古代エジプトに始まり、ギリシャ・ローマを経て、イランのササン朝、中国へ渡り、朝鮮半島を通って日本にまで伝わってきているのです。

Another example is the decorative pattern known in Japan as nindō-karakusa-mon’yō (忍冬唐草文様), which features motifs of the honeysuckle plant. This design originated in ancient Egypt and travelled across Greece, Rome, the Sassanid Empire in Persia, and China, eventually reaching Japan via the Korean Peninsula.

こんなに大昔に、そしてこんなに遠く離れた地域なのに、果てしない時間をかけてもしっかり伝わっている文化があるというのは、なんとも面白いですよね。

Isn’t it remarkable that something could travel such an enormous distance and take centuries to arrive—yet still be passed down and preserved?
