A welcoming flame

Today, the 13th of August, is Obon no iri — the first day of Obon.

Today is the day families light the mukaebi, the welcoming fire, to guide the spirits of their ancestors home. A flame outside the house, a beacon in the dark: this is where you belong. Come back to us.

In cities like Tokyo and Yokohama, where buildings press close together, it's difficult to light an open fire these days. But when I was a child, we lit one right outside my grandmother's house in Tokyo.

At the entrance, we arranged the cucumber horse and the aubergine cow — chopsticks pressed in as legs, dampened udon noodles draped over them like reins. I remember looking at them as a small child and thinking: so this is how our ancestors travel home. I tried to picture it — the spirits riding in, following the firelight.

Once the preparations were done, we made good use of the fire already burning outside. We played with sparklers — temochi hanabi. Not the great launched fireworks, of course; those are for the professionals. Just the hand-held kind, the ones that suit a garden and a summer evening. Every year, the fireworks at my grandmother's house were something I looked forward to. We came home covered in mosquito bites, every single time.

Even now, I imagine there are many people in quieter, greener parts of Japan welcoming Obon in the same way — the same rituals, the same summer, year after year.

Basic Strokes for Kanji
Thursday: Handwriting The Nine Ba...
The Mid-Autumn Moon
Pointing at the Moon
Tuesday: Mindfulness and Zen Pointing at the Moon Last Friday was Chuushuu no Meigetsu — the Mid...
