Basic Strokes for Kanji

The Nine Basic Strokes
You've probably looked at kanji at some point and thought: how on earth do you learn to write all of these?
The answer is that kanji follow rules — and once you understand them, things become much more manageable.
Every line in a kanji belongs to one of nine basic stroke types, known as kihon tenkaku — the nine fundamental strokes. Learn how to write these nine strokes, and you have the building blocks for almost every kanji there is.
The nine are: the horizontal stroke, the vertical stroke, the turn, the left sweep, the right sweep, the upward sweep to the right, the curve, the bend, and the dot.
The names may not mean much on their own — but take the character 木 (ki, tree) as an example. It's made up of just four strokes: a horizontal, a vertical, a left sweep, and a right sweep.
Try looking at a kanji and asking yourself: what strokes is this made of? You might find that kanji start to feel a lot less mysterious — and a lot easier to remember.
