スポーツの秋 Autumn, the Season of Sports

Wednesday — Nature & the Seasons
The 12th of October was a national holiday here in Japan: Sports Day (スポーツの日, Supōtsu no Hi).
The holiday has its roots in the 10th of October, 1964 — the date the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony was held. It became an annual public holiday, originally called Physical Education Day (体育の日, Taiiku no Hi), in commemoration. In 2000, like many Japanese holidays, it was moved to the second Monday of October so that it would always fall as part of a long weekend. Then in 2020, the name was updated to the more inclusive Sports Day.
There is a phrase in Japanese: supōtsu no aki — the season of sport. Autumn in Japan tends to be mild and clear, with temperatures comfortably in the low twenties, making it perfect weather for being active outdoors. That is where the expression comes from.
But sport is just the beginning. You also hear dokusho no aki — the season of reading — and shokuyoku no aki — the season of appetite. Autumn, it seems, is simply a good season for everything.
The first hints of winter still feel a long way off.
For now, I am content to stay right here in this season.
