語学学習を楽しむ方法？/How do you enojoy learning a language?

この週末、横浜では雪が降っていたので、私はずっと家にいました。そこでなんとなく始めたのが、皆さんご存知、Duolingoです。
ずいぶん前にこのニュースレターでも、「フィンランド語を勉強したい」と言ったことがあるのですが、恥ずかしながら、実は全く勉強は進んでいませんでした。当時はフィンランド語のテキストを買ってきて眺めていたのですが、本ではすぐには発音が分からないし、文法解説が先にあったのでなんとなく「難しそうだなあ」と感じたまま、止まってしまっていました。
それに比べてDuolingoはすぐにしゃべらせてくれますね！まだ始めたばかりですが、もうフィンランド語で名乗ることだけはできそう。
娘が同時に韓国語をトライしていたので、私もそれを聞いていたらなんとなく覚えてしまい、ソウルのお店でコーヒーを頼むこともできそうです。
これってすごくないですか？
もちろんDuolingoだけで全ての語学学習を済ませられるのかどうか、は分かりませんが、達成感が大きなモチベーションになることは確かですよね。
とても面白かったので、私は、フィンランド語と韓国語を始めることにしました。
Duolingoで喋るだけだと私は足りない気がしたので、そこで覚えたことをノートに書いていこうと思い、ノートを買ってきました。特に韓国語のハングルは文字も覚えないといけませんし。

Good evening! This is Iroha.
It snowed in Yokohama over the weekend, so I ended up staying at home the whole time. While I was there, I casually started something many of you probably know already—Duolingo.
A long time ago, I mentioned in this newsletter that I wanted to study Finnish. Embarrassingly enough, I hadn’t made any real progress at all. At the time, I bought a Finnish textbook and tried looking through it, but with books, it’s hard to know the pronunciation right away, and the grammar explanations came first. Somehow it all felt “a bit too difficult”, and I stopped.
Compared to that, Duolingo gets you speaking immediately, doesn’t it? I’ve only just started, but I think I can already introduce myself in Finnish.
My daughter was trying Korean at the same time, and just by listening along, I somehow picked it up—and now I feel like I could order a coffee in a shop in Seoul.
Isn’t that amazing?
Of course, I don’t know whether it’s possible to complete all language learning using Duolingo alone, but there’s no doubt that the sense of achievement it gives is a huge motivation.
I enjoyed it so much that I decided to start learning both Finnish and Korean.
Just speaking on Duolingo didn’t feel like enough for me, so I thought I’d write down what I learn in a notebook and bought one for that purpose. Especially with Korean, you need to learn the writing system—Hangul—as well.
So, how do you keep up with your Japanese studies?
I’d love it if you could share the different ways you make it work!
Trying to learn a language I know absolutely nothing about made me realise just how amazing it is that you are all studying Japanese.
