変わらないものは無い／Nothing stays the same

昨日、20年使い続けたテーブルを処分しました。私が結婚する前に買ったもので、赤ちゃんだったうちの娘も息子も、そのテーブルをベタベタに汚しながらご飯を食べました。

Yesterday, we, my family, said goodbye to a table we had used for 20 years.
I bought it before I got married, and both my daughter and son, when they were babies, used to eat at that table—getting it sticky and messy in the way only little children can.
何回か引っ越しているので、その時々でダイニングテーブルとして使ったり、部屋の壁につけて、息子がずっとゲームをしていた時期もありました。その子供たちももう今は19と17になりました。
We’ve moved house a few times, and the table’s role changed along the way.
Sometimes it was our dining table. Other times, it was pushed up against a wall in a bedroom—where my son spent long hours playing games at it.
Now those children are 19 and 17.
ずいぶん質の良いテーブルだったのですが、最近は出番がなく、今の家にどうしてもフィットしないので、粗大ゴミに出すことにしました。今の家を快適にして、もっと良い空間を作りたかったのです。
It was a beautifully made table, of very good quality.
But recently, it had gone unused, and it just didn’t quite fit in our current home. We decided to let it go and arranged for it to be collected as bulky waste.
We want to make our home more comfortable—a space that suits how we live now.
決断は間違っていないです。今後の生活により良い空間を作る。子供は大きくなりましたし、生活スタイルもどんどん変わります。
I know I made the right decision.
Our lives are changing. My children have grown, and so has our lifestyle.
あのテーブルが今後ここで活躍する姿が見えなかった。だから処分しました。でもそれは、もう不要な存在、どうでもいい存在になった、というのとはちょっと違う気がします。
It was time to create space for what comes next. I didn’t get rid of the table because it had become useless or meaningless.
That’s not it at all.
咲いた桜が必ず散るように、雲がどんどん形を変えていくように、世の中、何事も同じであり続けることはないんです。それが「無常」（常／同じでは無い）です。
Just as cherry blossoms must fall once they’ve bloomed, and clouds are always shifting in shape, nothing in this world stays the same forever.
That is mujo—the truth of impermanence.
その事実を受け入れて、余計な執着（過ぎ去った過去にしがみつく思い）は手放す。それを禅や仏教は教えてくれます。
Zen and Buddhist teachings remind us to accept this, and to let go of unnecessary attachments—especially those that tie us to the past.
咲いた花は散る。出会ったものは別れる。だから一つ一つの出会いに感謝するのを忘れないようにしたい。「一期一会」です。
Flowers fall. People part ways.
And that is exactly why we must appreciate each encounter.
This is ichigo ichie—“one time, one meeting.”
そして、手放した先に、新しいものが入ってくるのです。
And once we let go, we make space for something new to arrive.
昨日は「テーブル、今までありがとう。」と言って別れました。私たちはずっと覚えているからね。
いろは
Yesterday, I said to the table,
“Thank you. You’ve served us well.”
And we will remember you—always.
