書くことで、今ここにいる／Through writing, I return to the here and now
もう７月も終わりですね。
It’s hard to believe July is almost over already.
７月は皆さんにとってどんな月でしたか？
What kind of month has it been for you?
もう夏休みに入っている人もいるのかな？
Maybe some of you are already on summer holiday?
世間がバカンスムードになってきてソワソワしていますか？
Are you starting to feel that restless holiday mood in the air?
私は、今までにやったことのないチャレンジをこの年になって（！）やっています。
As for me—I’m taking on a challenge I’ve never tried before, at this age (!).
正直にいうと、この夏が終わったら、私の40代も終わるんです・・・！信じられます？
To be honest, once this summer ends… so will my 40s. Can you believe it?
私は半世紀も生きてきた自覚はないけれども（笑）、でも今になってやったことのないことをやってみている毎日が楽しいです。
I certainly don’t feel like I’ve lived half a century yet! (laughs)
But I’ve truly been enjoying these days of trying something new for the first time.
オンラインで講座を作ることは今回が初めてです。
This is actually my first time creating an online course.
でも、日本語を上手に書きたい、という気持ちと、日本で生活しながら、学びながら、何度となく自分の手で日本語を書いてきた時間は、それこそ半世紀に渡るわけだから、きっと皆さんにも、「手書きで書かれた日本語の良さ」と、「日本語を手書きする良さ」の、両方をお伝えできると思っています。
But the desire to write Japanese beautifully—and all the time I’ve spent living and learning while handwriting Japanese over the years—well, that spans nearly five decades.
That’s why I’m confident I can share with you not only the charm of handwritten Japanese, but also the joy of writing Japanese by hand.
私は自分の手で字を書いたり、手を使って編んだり、折ったり、洗ったり、拭いたり、磨いたり、いわゆる「手仕事」が好きです。
I’ve always loved working with my hands—writing, knitting, folding, washing, wiping, polishing…
That kind of daily handwork brings me a quiet kind of happiness.
どんなにテクノロジーが進んで便利になったとしても、いやだからこそ、自分の手を使って生活をすること、自分が今ここで生きている実感をもつ事がとても大事な気がしています。
No matter how advanced technology becomes—maybe because of that very convenience—I feel it’s even more important to live with your own hands, to feel truly present and alive in your everyday life.
日本語は、「きれいに書く」ことにとても敏感な言語です。
Japanese is a language that pays close attention to how beautifully characters are written.
