新年度と桜／Year Start and Sakura

今日は4月７日（月）。日本中の多くの学校では、今日が新学年、新学期のスタートだったと思います。
Today is Monday, 7th April.
For many schools across Japan, today marked the beginning of a new academic year and new school term.
今日は街のあちこちで、入学式に行く子供と正装した親御さんの姿が見られました。
All around town, you could see children heading to their entrance ceremonies, accompanied by parents dressed in formal clothes.
新しい学校生活にワクワクしたり、緊張したり、友達できるかな、と不安になっている子もたくさんいるでしょう。
Some children are probably feeling excited about their new school life, while others may be nervous or wondering, "Will I make new friends?"
みんなの新生活が楽しいものになるといいですね。
I sincerely hope this new chapter is full of joy for all of them.
日本の学校は、１学期、２学期、３学期、の３学期制のところと、前期、後期、の２学期制のところが多いかと思います。
In Japan, many schools follow either a three-term system (first, second, third term) or a two-semester system (first and second semester).
今日は、１学期もしくは前期のスタートだったところが多いです。
Today was the start of the first term or first semester in most schools.
街には他に、真新しいスーツを着た新社会人もたくさん見かけます。
It wasn’t just students—new employees were also easy to spot today, dressed in crisp new suits.
みんなランチタイムに揃って出てくるので、すぐわかります。
They tend to head out together at lunchtime, so you can recognise them straight away.
こちらも慣れない社会人生活、ドキドキしながらも楽しそう。
Although they’re still adjusting to the working world, many of them looked excited, despite a few nervous expressions.
今年は、3月に冬のように寒い日があり、桜が咲くのがいつもより遅かったので、学校の入学式が満開の桜の下で行われて、きっと見事だったことでしょう。
This year, the cherry blossoms bloomed a little later than usual, as we had some surprisingly cold days in March, almost like winter.
As a result, the school entrance ceremonies took place under trees in full bloom, just like in the past.
（私が子供の頃は、桜といえば4月の入学式に満開、だったのですが、最近は温暖化のため早まって、3月の卒業式の時に咲くことが多かったんです）。
(When I was a child, it was typical for cherry blossoms to be in full bloom around the time of the April entrance ceremonies, but in recent years, due to global warming, they’ve often peaked in March—around graduation time instead.)
きっとワクワクした気持ちに、文字通り「花を添えて」くれたでしょうね。
I imagine the sight of blooming sakura added a literal touch of beauty to the excitement of a fresh start.
この「新年度」と「桜」。日本では風物詩です。
In Japan, this combination of the new school or work year and cherry blossoms is a seasonal tradition in itself.
4月はいろいろなことのスタートの時期、桜に応援してもらっている気分になるのは、きっと私だけではないはずです。
April marks the beginning of many things, and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels as though the cherry blossoms are gently cheering us on.
